Sabbath Void

Okay, I don't think I've ever blogged something with a more //M\\ title.

Today is Abby's birthday. Collectively, now: Happy Birthday! Um, more soul, perhaps? Oh wait, I think this blog is just me, or us, (that's a link to an e-card. to show you I slightly care.) again.

So... here are some new noises I dig:

SALEM
If you go on Last.fm, there's like 5 Salems vying for the right to bear the name. The 5th and last Salem is SALEM. And they're, like, my favourite band.

Angel Deradoorian
I think she's been in plenty of ace-seeming bands; the standout name being Dirty Projectors. Stripped of her bass duties for that band, and given GarageBand and a tad space, she fills the void.

And, like, here's a generic webcomic, from Xplosm.net. My friend FWDd it to me... "and I thought you might like it".

A Grave Error

I take it back : IT IS NOT OKAY NOT TO LIKE RAP.

Jay-Z at Glastonbury was electrifying. Still think he should've gone on with just a mic and an MC, and playing 'Wonderwall' is akin to going to a BNP rally with a rucksack and turban on, but still. Well done.

EDIT: "I Saw You On Popjustice".

And, and I'll see you at 4.30. True say.

Wednesday

DAY SEVERAL THOUSAND OF MY SLIGHTLY DISAPPOINTING LIFE

Sorry, but: I made a PROFIT (+£15) at Book Return Day.

Also, Superman Revenge Squad are being interviewed! By me!

If you'd like to ask him for a spare sock (to go with Joel from Good Shoes', which still smells of Persil, even post-gig and a year on) or what he drinks before writing songs or how sexually fragile Jeffrey Lewis is in real life, then the usual address is open to yr questions.

Time to crack open the Ole Speckled Hen, righto. Or, as Holly Golightly once shouted over a perfectly good White Stripes collaboration: "Was that jolly good? Jolly good, cup o' tea then, Bruce."

DAY #3 AT A REAL LIFE JOURNALISM WEBSITE

My face is going to be the front page of Popjustice.com, amazing. AMAZING.

Tuesday

DAY #2 AT A REAL LIFE JOURNALISM WEBSITE

Quite fun. There is an indie-loving work experience near me who likes Cazals and like, the sun is out.

UPDATE: the indie-loving work experience person should have a DOCUMENTARY about her, oh my gosh. She is a direct product of V*ce, and doesn't know who Mutya Buena or Alphabeat are. I couldn't find any fun grime in the CD box. I got a Ting Tings CD though, for the lulzz.

Monday

UPDATE: Still awkward. Free CDs, though, and guestlist to gigs. No heavy hints got through to p.rob about VIP at Latitude. Tommorow, maybe.

Girl Talk 'does a Radiohead' and DIM is too cheap to care

Naturally, when faced with the chance to get free music or pay actual, real-life money from my bank account, I chose the cheaper option. However, apparently karma exists on the internet, so one is faced with this when they don't give money to line Greg Gillis' pockets -

I have opted to pay $0.00 because:
I may donate later
I can't afford to pay
I don't really like Girl Talk
I don't believe in paying for music
I have already purchased this album
I don't value music made from sampling
I am part of the press, radio, or music industry
Other reasons

Oh, the guilt.

Reduce, review, recycle (The 3Rs)

(I have a 'Best of Indie 2006' playlist that still exists from those times when a deluded one might consider the Libertines still to have some bearing of cultural relevance. If you still think that today then you're just a dum dum. Anyway, on that playlist is the song Motorcycle by The Rumble Strips. If you ignore The Bad Bits about, say, the vocalist's style and all, it's a great pop song.

Also great (by comparison with the rest of their back catalogues) is the sunn o))) / Boris collaboration, Altar, from, like, last yr, or the one before. If you want to get yr foot in the door of Japanese rock (what Boris do a wee bit of the time), drone in a metallic nuance (Magnesium-coated Oasis records and also sunn o))) a bit of the time and their ilk) or just wish to immerse yrself in a kvltest path to helicon then NLT from this album is where to go, yo. A really dumb description of this piece of definite music is that it sounds like a thousand doors shutting at once (wow, I haven't forgotten everything about Baucis and Philemon!). I keep willing myself to delete it from my iPod but listening to it is an act of immersion. Yr not ripped on fascist ideas, yr tenuously flying into a bladed fan. Yr a swan. NLT. Check it.

If you want to die in bass, but you want that bass to be the one of a maybe-ironically-bearded indie musician, Spires by The Longcut. No, not the album version, you... tit. Find the Airtight Session version. It is actually a vacuum. Hear the wailing (whaling) and the drumming that hasn't sounded so much like progressive murder since Tyson (or his porno-name equivalent) banged his drums about killing someone for Two Gallants. This is probably what I mean when I say post-rock. Do you post-rock? Very nice.

Socks are therefore those of sense. I need to run down the weekly charts. Or monthly. Or biennial, right? Sorry! Sorry, I meant to tell you all about my opinions on these recrods like four weeks ago. I told you about The Morning Paper's album and The Rascal's EP like two weeks ago. I just casually admired Slow Down Tallahassee's The Beautiful Light and these three (?) tracks from Kidnapper Bell away and from afar. Sorry. Do you want me to re-submit the best of my best ever bestest work? Yeah? Well I'm Phil and I've never, ever, written anything worth yr time (seriously, kill yr idols) and henceforth:)

The Sonic Hearts - To Be Someone
So, this group's signed to EMI, toured with Scouting For Girls and had their album produced by, uh, dude who's "worked with the Stereophonics and many more". If you're looking for a gift for your Mum and want to go with something more "mellow" or "irresistibly inspiring" (read "insipid") than The Kooks' new, uh, album, you can have this off me. Granted, it's only two tracks long, and one is an instrumental version of the other, but then you wouldn't want to confuse your Mum, would you? The album will probably be bursting with new ideas and major chords and powerful vocals... Well, it'll probably be like this, but even more "distinctive". Seriously, email me with "I Think Your Sarcastic Attitude Stinks - The Sonic Hearts Are A Fantastic New Indie Rock Band That Do Genuinely Make Me Sing Along And Have Captivated My Mind" in the subject line, and I'll send it to you. Or just throw it away.

The Psychotic Reaction - Genre Music Is The Enemy
Nice spirit, guys. But "better than oysters"? I know oysters can leave you in rapturous diarhhoea and all, but generic indie rock, a singer who can't sing (in a bad way) and a band with very few ideas leave you with an end result sounding, on "Hand-Me-Downs (Made Me The Man I Am)" like a 20p single found in an Oxfam bin by a group who "can't understand their failure to capture the hearts and minds... blah blah", and on "Knickers in the Photocopier" like whining lad rockers. "A Moment of Clarity" does manage to suggest they can sustain a catchy verse and guitar line, though overall, it's pretty uninspired stuff. Like, if half the members of Super Furry Animals left, and the others had 2 days to record an album, when they were all totally drunk.

The Morning Paper - It's Getting Clearer

A breathless opening 2 minutes. The question: will it get clearer? Here's hoping not.

There's almost transcendent here, yet remove a couple of layers and there are some Scandinavian vocals. They ain't obscured, they're floating on the surface; mysterious and strongly accented English words have a surprisingly lush effect. They're disembodied amongst the gleeful keyboard, drums and whatever-effects.

Where am I? Um, Skarmabrink, 2007/2008. The three members of The Morning Paper are shimmering.

"Making You Up" allows for the holding of breath and a touch of chimes, the constant swirl of the melodic drums lending a blown and windy feel to this record. The chatter of the "Sidewalks" breaks in, and if you listen carefully, so does traffic and an '80s-treated synth. David Kyhlberg's words echo in to this sweet collection of chirps, reflections and sweeping dreams of tainted friendships. When "Thin Rain" takes a break, about 2 minutes in, it's only so we can hear the idle talk in the village, and appreciate the scenery (note: birdsong) - so it's a collection of summer songs. "Paint A Dream" wishes to be found. "We stood still in the face of feeling" - although any pretence of emotion of nullified by female vocals (Ida Bergstrom) over a techno backbeat, that just about manages not to impose over the top of what sort of had to be the most anthemic song on the album. "Young" is kind of a fitting, wordless death to the album suitable because by then I'm already well out of it.

Wojtek Godsisz - The Moon and the Yew Tree

Former singer in 90s "teen punk" band Symposium follows April's "Burning Ideals" EP with a rock song which is about supernatural personalities turning a man insane. Perhaps the man is the aforementioned singer. "Time of the Wolf" is the b-side. The title might further suggest Wojtek's insanity. Bloody hell, look, he's even got cellos and accordions! Probably mental.

Evidence on the contrary: the guy's got a nice voice (apart from on "Time of the Wolf", where he tries his best to sing like Dave Grohl without being too obvious and ends up sounding stupid), nicely deranged song ideas and lyrics (unfortunately not quite bordering on psychotic) and repetitive, meandering messes of music to back him.

Whether or not he's mad, the single is a disappointment. He's got traces of anger, of a storyteller and of excitement somewhere in him, but for some reason he's writing fairytales for 14 year olds who like the Magic Numbers.

Burning Star Core

If you ever wondered what tying yr limbs into knots felt like then you weren't even close. Would you like to inhale coffee for eight straight hours? This wld be illegal in Singapore but cld well be what North Korean FM radio sounds like. Blood? Check. Lightning? Check. Houston, teleport me to the surface of the Sun.

BTW, lad rock is cool.

Review - Soundtracks To Unfunny E4 Sitcoms About Coming Of Age

The fact that the name itself sounds like a laddish indie rock outfit from Reading, who wear waistcoats on stage and mourn the death of The Libertines, and model themselves on Oasis makes you instantly dislike the show. However, the worst is yet to come.
The Inbetweeners has the worst soundtrack ever. The Fratellis' entire discography is played throughout, under the hopelessly terrible dialogue between the four unlikeable, repellent leads. Subconsciously, overplayed lad-rock hits enter your mind and by the end of the seemingly endless 23 minutes of cliches, 'you're gay' and 'I want to shag your mum' jokes, you're left feeling like you want to drown yourself in Carling and punch Alex Turner in the face. Teddy Picker, total classic, yeah? Yeah? Yeah!!!
Then, out of the smoking ashes of post-Skins revelry, where the soundtrack was actually pretty good, come the lilting vocals of the genius, the enigma, the talent - Pete Doherty. It seems too predictable for a Libertines' song to be played on a TV show that is so chronically laddy, but apparently XFM DJ Marsha Shandur (omgzz, XFM, love that radio station, Alex Zane was on that, right? He is such an indie heartthrob!!), the music consultant for the show forgot to read the memo that clearly stated stereotypes were trying to be broken, not adhered to. And so Doherty gets another thousand pounds in his pocket, spends half on crack and half on studio time for the next Babyshambles catastrophe, so The Inbetweeners can have another few songs to play under some more homophobic jokes in the next series. The only way this soundtrack could possibly be worse is if they did some kind of Sun o)))/Oasis remix, turned it up to 11 and played it over a drunken orgy, Skins Party-style, and even that might give it some personality. In summary, this is terrible, meaningless music and terrible, meaningless television. The Inbetweeners is surely a sign of the imminent apocalypse - 4 main characters, 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. You heard it here first.

Progressions

Not much of a post here. Not many redeeming qualities. Just a few rememberances:

!) The 'msn idea' thing was to incorporate the discussion of 'What have you learnt from yr GCSEs?' or something. That is, should we have anything interesting to say. Or we could conduct a survey.

") I now know a great deal of anti-USSR jokes.

£) Recipes could be forthcoming for pavlova and also pannekoeken.

$) A list of people that we discover are 'walkers, not washers'.

%) A list of the greatest 'BBC Schools GCSE Bitesize' tracks.

Why do all my ideas quickly descend into bad-sounding lists of lists?

Doodles and Disjointed Lists

The writing part is actually hilarious and brilliant, it is such a shame that it is illegible. Damn you scanner, damn you to hell. I have examples of each type of band, though I shouldn't say As It May Offend. The doodles were drawn over a period of 3 revision sessions. Also I am rubbish at cross-hatching. (slightly better picture here : http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3186/2558481935_5bffb4185c.jpg?v=0)

ps 'Tender' is the worst Blur song, apart from 'Ernold Same' which isn't even a song, but just audible shit. 'Rapture Rapes The Muses' and 'The Past is a Grotesque Animal' are of Montreal's best songs. of Montreal would never write a song like 'Ernold Same', which is why I like Kevin Barnes more than Damon Albarn, though Damon Albarn is better at 'world music', whatever that means.

Hey ET,
Remember sending me a 'lucky dip'? I know I actually quite liked some of yr discarded music, but I can't remember which of it I liked. Oh - Ray Rumours and Ennio Morricone. And, um...
Anyway, I thought I'd drop you a line, an email even, because you're leaving the UK. Are you getting a 'proper job'? Will you still write for Plan B?
Yeah. I thought of writing to you and saying "best wishes", and all. But I forgot, until today's English writing exam. For GCSE. The best two options I had were 'Describe a dream world', but I doubted I could do it as well as Debord could so I left it since I couldn't fill 4 pages with "permanent revolution". So I chose "Write about a famous person. Explain why you admire them." I wrote about you for 4... 3 pages.
Don't look so shocked! (Or indifferent). It was either you or Graeme Obree. I didn't even know the year of Obree's 24 hour record triumph, so I did you. 7 paragraphs. I lied a lot, and said that Alan McGee and The Guardian praised Plan B. Said that you called Pearl Jam "awful". Said that NME sacked you in '86. Said that kids only bothered you to comment on how cool yr myspace photo with Kim Deal of rock group The Breeders was. I lied a lot. Sorry.
The crux of the essay was that, with pissing off to the UK when Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains and The Smoshing Pampkins became popular and running CTCL for 12 issues and pissing off to Australia, you 'stuck to yr guns' or something. I basically murdered a Wikipedia article. But included lots of lovely wordplay to get that article an A* in my name. Please don't complain to the exam board, because I fell over myself in Latin and Chemistry and now German and soon Physics so that I could get Bs or something. I want to do well in English, likewise in History, and one dayh write some stuff. A little bit like the 'famous' Everett True, or Kurt Vonnegut, who I like reading. I wanted to do work experience with Plan B magazine but didn't get a reply. Oh well.
I hope you don't take offence at me contacting you, or writing about you. Don't worry, I didn't call you my "hero". I'm just really bad at keeping myself together in emails. Whatever, dude. I'm going to do a 'zine' with my friend Abby because we both want to and we have a summer and the ideals and iPods and internet connections to do it, and I don't want to link you to another useless blog. Maybe I can send a copy to Australia (I said Melbourne in the exam). For the good times - those I think you've given me. Hope you and yr family are well.

Why I Like Grizzly Bear

It is 12.21 and my last ever maths exam (ever, ever, EVER! I know!!!!) is in less than 40 minutes. My entire brain has gone into meltdown, I am questioning Pythagorus and whoever invented Parabolas and wondering how to make 'x' the subject of all equations in the universe ever.
Basically, I have Lost It. Now, at times like this, one must take deep breaths and think happy thoughts and, most importantly, not worry at all. Now, with the sheer level of stress my brain is having to cope with, this seems nigh-on impossible at a time like this. So, you ask, what do I do?
I listen to Grizzly Bear, of course. The mournful tones of Ed Droste and co slow the racing pulse and de-jitter the nerves (de-jitter? what the..?) The layers seem almost sun-drenched while simultaneously strumming the woes of a thousand heartbreaks. In short, the music is epic and far larger than life. It makes GCSEs seem insignificant when Droste wails, 'What now, what now, what now, what now...'
Thank you Grizzly Bear, for keeping my head screwed on in the worst of times.

And now I must go and face the abyss.

DIM 4LYFE.
