MI-CA-CHU

Hey everyone, look! Meaningless assertions ;

1. Micachu is the best New Thing I have heard in a Significantly Long Time.

2. Micachu does brill garage mixtapes with people and they're not shit. Like, at all.

3. Micachu live is like Micachu on record but louder and more fun and less detached.

4. Micachu 'splits opinion' like most new things from London. This is why her Wikipedia has the best (and meanest) vandalism on it. Literally;

"She is most famously remembered for a promotional free show which took place in October 2008 in HMV Oxford Street. During the set she played each song from her album Lone Ranger backwards (including some impressive reversed vocals) whilst simultaneously naked and bent over, with her back towards the audience. Mid-performance she invited any interested viewers to penetrate her openly "with as much violence as you feel is necessary: my soul is long gone". Over 350 attendees accepted the offer before the store had to be closed for reasons of health and safety due to the increasingly slippery floor."

5. Okay admit it, that's hilarious.

6. This doesn't stop Micachu being so 10/10 that it is near-impossible to stop listening to her.

Her debut album, 'Jewellery' is produced by some vaguely cool guy called Matthew Herbert and being lauded by equally cool people like Dazed & Confused or whatever. It doesn't really matter. What matters is that she can crank out a mindblowing album, look like some kind of eccentric and adorable boyslashgirl and make me want to be in her band. Man, I really want to be in her band.

This won't descend into an 'album' 'review' primarily because you don't need a flippant hack ("blogosphere") to tell you that Micachu is Now and Relevant and will probably be the definitive indie pop thing of 2009. You're watching her strum a broken guitar with a CD case and the drummer's playing some jerky Galang-esque beat and banging a wine bottle and it's like, 'Yeah. This is 2009. This is the kind of crazy shit we do. And you know what? It sounds amazing.' Okay, maybe you're not that smug, but you're happier listening to dischordant hoover-pop (srsly) than 'The' 'Big' 'Pink's latest EP.

There's snarling, bluesy noise pop with 'Just In Case' and 'Turn Me Well' (which is like Top 100 Songs Of My Lifetime-worthy) and melodic harmony-driven songs like 'Golden Phones' and the truly brilliant 'Vulture'. Lyrics are 10/10. Her voice is genuinely 10/10. Everything is 10/10. This is my favourite thing of 2009 so far. Can you tell?
